Prime Inc., Fitness Trucking Inc,\u00a0and\u00a0Montague Corporation, a bicycle company out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, have partnered to get drivers on the road to health.<\/p>\n
Truck drivers have the highest rate of obesity of any industry in the United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cA study of 2,950 truckers published in the\u00a0Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine<\/em>\u00a0in 2009 found that\u00a085% were overweight and 55% obese.<\/strong>\u00a0That followed a 2007 study of 92 truckers in the\u00a0Journal of the American Dietetic Association<\/em>\u00a0that found that obesity among long-haul truck drivers was \u201cmuch more severe\u201d than among the general public,\u201d USA Today reported.<\/p>\n \u201cIt found that 86% were overweight and 66% were obese; that compared with 65% of the general public that were overweight and nearly half who were obese. A 2007 University of Utah study of 96 commercial drivers, most of them long-haul truckers, found that 68% of the truckers were smokers.\u201d<\/p>\n Montague bicycles fold to the compact size of 36x28x12 inches in 20 seconds, making it easy for drivers to store the bikes.<\/p>\n Robert Low, founder and president of Prime and chairman of the Truckload Carriers Association, says that Prime is committed to helping drivers combat obesity.<\/p>\n Low has enlisted the help of\u00a0Siphiwe Baleka of Fitness Trucking Inc. to incorporate a 13-week fitness program for the company\u2019s drivers.<\/p>\n \u201cThis focus and commitment, when directed toward fitness, is sure to yield success.
